| Tips on Ordering Picture Frame Molding
What is Oversized Length Molding?
Length molding is a long stick of picture frame molding, 3 ft, 4 ft. or 5 ft.
long, that you cut and join yourself using frame making equipment such as
a miter saw, sander and V-Nail joiner. While it costs more to buy the
equipment, length molding generally costs 50%- 70% less than the cost of
retail frames.
HOW TO SELECT LENGTH PICTURE FRAME MOLDING:
To select an appropriate length and width of molding follow these steps:
Step One: Decide on a Appropriate Width of Molding
The width of the molding is the distance across the face, the part that is facing
outward when the frame is hanging on the wall. As a rule of thumb, consider a
frame width of 1 inch for frame sizes “8 x 10” to “15” x 19”. Consider a frame
width of about 1.5 inches for frame sizes from “16” x 20” to “23 x 25”.
Consider a frame width of about 2 inches for frame sizes “24 x 36” and larger.
Step Two: Select the Desired Style of Molding
Look over the selections and choose the frame style you want, note the width of the molding you choose.
Step Three: Determine the Appropriate Lengths of Molding Needed to Make Your Frame.
- Add together the four sides of the frame you wish to make. For example:
To make a “16 x 20” frame. Figure 16 + 16 + 20 + 20 = 72 inches.
- Multiply the widths of the molding by 8, and add that to the sum. For
example: To make a “16 x 20” frame using 1.5 inch wide molding, multiply 1.5
x 8 = 12; then add 12 inches to 72: 12 + 72”= 84 inches.
- Add an inch and a half to the total to allow for some breathing room in
the frame recess so the stack of mat board, foam board and glazing doesn’t fit
too tightly, and also allow for the thickness of the blade when it cuts the
molding. For example: 84 inches + 1-1/2 inches = 85 ½ total inches of frame molding.
- At this point you know the length of the molding in inches, to discover
the length of the molding needed in feet, divide the length in inches by 12. For
example: 85 1/2 ÷ 12 = 7-1/8 feet of frame molding.
- Select the best combination of available lengths to make your frame. For example: since the moldings are not sold in 7 1/8 foot lengths, you will need two lengths. Remember, it is always better to have more than you need. For the example above, two four-foot lengths would be appropriate.
When the molding length requires an exact (or nearly exact) length, it is
recommended that you select the next longer length to allow for a little extra
room.
Step Four: The Right Frame Making Equipment.
Make sure you have the equipment that you need to Cut and Join the Molding!

Why Does the 7 and 8 foot Lengths Cost So
Much?
The most cost effective method of shipping a length of picture frame molding
in small quantities is through UPS and FED EX. Unfortunately, UPS and FED
EX are essentially package services and frown on large packages which don't
fit on their conveyor belts and are difficult to sort therefore requiring special
handling. For instance, when UPS encounters such packages, they charge a
special OVERSIZE RATE which is equivalent to a package weighing 70 lbs.
For a lightweight, low cost item like picture frame molding, which may only
weigh 8 or 12 pounds, this adds significantly to the cost. At FrameWorxz.com,
while our shopping cart system provides the actual UPS charge for shipping
when you check out, it does not factor in any oversize charges. This is not a
problem on moldings that are 3 ft, 4 ft or 5 ft in length because they are not
considered oversize by UPS or FED EX, but on moldings that are 6 ft. or
longer, the OVERSIZE charge applies. Since our shopping cart only provides
molding lengths of 3 ft, 4 ft, and 5 ft in length, orders for longer lengths will
need to be telephoned in to our office or if they are place through the online
store, we will contact you by telephone provide you with the shipping charge,
which includes the oversize charge, at that time. THERE IS AN EASY WAY
AROUND THIS COST. Whenever possible, purchase a combination of 3, 4 or
5 foot moldings to make your frames. You see, it is almost always worthwhile
to figure out how to make your frame from combinations of shorter lengths.
