Determining the Correct Picture Frame

Ever wondered what size frame you would require for an existing picture that you want to mat and frame? Most of us have and FrameWorxz® has provided you with the following reference table that will assist you in determining what frame to order. You will notice that we have provided the standard Mat border size in addition to the rabbet dimensions. As an example, let’s use a 5 x 7 picture and you would like to order a frame. Locating the 5 x 7 under Picture Size in the table and reading across to “Show Dimensions” provides for a show frame size of 7 ½ x 9 ½: show referring to the dimensions of the mat and picture that will actually show in the picture frame. Rabbet Dimensions illustrate the frame sizes that reflect the groove around the inside of the frame that holds the glass, mat and backboard.

Rabbet dimensions are usually ½ inch greater in length and width (1/4 inch per side) than show dimensions. As you may have surmised, standard frame sizes don’t always provide the exact dimensions needed for the suggested mat borders. In cases such as this, order the next largest frame and compensate the difference in size with a wider mat border. Should you have any questions or would like a frame made to a specific size, e.g. 7 ½ x 9 ½ for the 5 x 7 picture, just give us a call (989) 550-7648 and well will assist you with your order!

Pictures and picture matting represent many different configurations that are outside the capabilities and standard products that many retail outlets provide for the artist, craftsman or home. FrameWorxz® provides you with custom picture frame alternatives and options that represent yesteryears quality craftsmanship without the added incremental costs typically associated with standard framing, matting or archival services.
