Frequently Asked Questions

These questions are taken from inquiries over time and may assist you in answering your questions relating to FrameWorxz® Picture Frames and Standard and Victorian moldings. If your questions are not addressed below, we encourage you to submit through our contact page.

1. What kinds of picture frame molding and picture rail can you make?
We have many popular Traditional and Victorian picture frame moldings available in various widths and profiles as well as moldings which include rosettes, plinths, chair and picture rails and many more. Examples can be viewed through our Product Pages. We can also forward pictures to your email if you request it.

2. I have a picture frame molding that I cannot find anywhere; can you make me this particular profile?
Yes, all we need is a cross section that illustrates the profile. The majority of the current moldings have been created from samples provided by customers and restorers who wish to match existing patterns.

3. What species of wood do you typically use in your picture frame moldings?
Much of picture frame molding runs have traditionally been Poplar, Walnut, Red Oak, White Oak, Cherry, and Ash among several exotic species. If you plan on painting your picture frame molding, we suggest Poplar as it accepts paint and looks great painted.

4. What kinds of picture frames do you make?
With a Victorian home, we have accumulated a number of picture frame profiles of various thicknesses and widths. We provide the frame moldings that are profiled in a variety of patterns as well as the completed frames in all sizes. Many do-it-yourselfers tend to prefer the custom picture frame sectionals which are pre-mitered and ready for assembly and finishing. Others prefer to purchase picture frame molding in lengths of 3, 4 or 5 feet to use in their picture or art framing projects.

5. What is a typical picture frame molding run?
We have always been a preferred supplier of small runs due to our pricing and will also provide quotes for bulk picture frame molding lengths if desired. Typical bulk picture frame molding runs are less than 200 feet.

6. Do you provide discounts to frame shops?
Discounts are provided on a case by case basis and depend on the whether it is a onetime purchase or a customer that we continuously supply picture frame moldings to. More often than not, clients receiving a discount order picture frames or picture frame moldings each month or have a business. Check for discounts on our webpage as well as the FrameWorxz Facebook page.

7. If I need a custom profile in a picture frame molding, am I charged for the profile mill blade?
The cost of custom profiles needing the creation of a mill knife is shared; FrameWorxz will pay half the cost of the custom milling knife and the other half is charged to the customer. A standard knife costs $ 90.00 to 120.00 dollars depending on size which means the shared cost is approximately $ 45.00 and above. Custom milling knife profiles cost $42.00 an inch and are made from M2 high speed steel. Typical turnaround for custom knives is seven to ten days. FrameWorxz retains the custom knife and reserves the right to use the knife for future picture frame or molding orders. We provide standard and custom knives at cost to our customers when our existing profiles do not match their picture frame molding needs. This cost sharing practice enhances our ability to provide our customers with competitive pricing.

8. Are your picture frames finished or unfinished?
Our picture frames and picture frame moldings are unfinished and are ready for applying a stain, sealer or paint if desired. Cherry frames are often left unfinished and are allowed to naturally age to produce a dark rich burgundy color. Of course, we will finish your picture frame if requested for a nominal charge!

9. Where do you get your wood stock from?
Much of the wood we use in our shop is taken from our own standing timber or purchased logs and is sawn to our specifications. We have a Woodmizer band saw mill and have the advantage to determine our board thickness and width needs prior to sawing allowing the full use of each log we saw. We also purchase local kiln dried hardwood as needed to augment our lumber requirements from local sawyers when available.

10. Do you have a store?
Yes, we have a FrameWorxz Store and Studio located at 3540 North Hurds Corner Road between Caro and Cass City Michigan. Our store serves as our studio and framing shop as well as retail store for picture frame equipment and supplies. We also participate in a number of Art and Craft Shows throughout the region.

11. How much notice do I need to give you for custom picture frame sectionals?
Our custom sectional department will make your picture frame to your specifications the same day when in stock and ship the following day. On the average, our custom sectional orders are shipped two to three days after being received.

12. What do I do if you cannot make what I need?
Once in a while, we will receive a customer request that exceeds our capability, either volume or complexity of profile. In these cases, we will refer you to one of our craftsman colleagues who specialize in restorative wood products, colleagues who have the skills, experience and specialty to address your particular need.

13. Is your store open on Sunday?
Our store is closed on Sunday as well as our online store as we consider Sunday as a day of rest. We are a Mennonite family that values our worshiping the LORD and setting time aside for family involvement.

14. Why did you choose the Woodmizer Band Saw Mill
Prior to purchasing a Woodmizer Saw, we looked at several of the competing saw mills at trade shows and marketing demonstrations. The Woodmizer Saw Mill performed exceptionally well in sawing all types of species including dry hard maple. It also provided me an opportunity to own a well built saw mill at an affordable price. We purchased ours while at the Michigan State Agricultural Show in 2001 and are extremely pleased with its performance.

15. Do you have picture frame molding favorites that have emerged from customer requests?
We each have our favorites when it comes to picture frame molding and type of wood species. Much of your choice depends upon what you are framing such as a picture or artwork. We can help you select your molding profile as well as your type of wood and mat for any project if with the help of a picture if you are not a local customer.

16. Do you ever demonstrate your Woodmizer band saw?
We have demonstrated the Woodmizer saw mill on several occasions to customers who have an interest in purchasing a saw mill of their own. We do not directly represent the Woodmizer Corporation but they have requested several times for us to demonstrate our saw mill to potential customers who reside in our area. Our band saw mill provides us with more than enough lumber to satisfy our picture framing and molding requirements. Woodmizer has several models to choose from and you can request information from them by calling (317) 271-1542 and requesting to talk to inside sales.

17. Do you saw logs into lumber for other customers?
With a Woodmizer saw mill, we are often asked if we would saw lumber from logs that customers deliver. We rarely engage in sawing lumber for customers, but occasionally saw on shares on species that we find difficult to acquire or we are in an out-of-stock condition. For example, a recent occasion involved a customer who had a walnut log delivered as a result of negotiating the sawing for shares of the lumber. Basically, the practice is on a case by case basis.

18. Can I purchase sawdust from your business for animal bedding?
The sawdust that is produced from the business is used in by our children in a business endeavor that started out as a small hobby years ago. They use the sawdust to bed down laying hens, horses and fill roosts. Today, and many chickens and horses later, we continue to use the sawdust and there is typically little sawdust available.

19. How do you handle shipping frames and picture frame moldings?
We use Fed Ex as our preferred shipper as the result of their service and prompt delivery times. We also use the post office to assure that we are receiving the lowest rates for our customers for their point of delivery. Our emphasis is to provide you with the best service and quality in shipping your order.

20. Do oversize Shipments require specialized packaging?
Oversized shipments, which generally represent those orders which have molding length of 8 foot, have a small Fed Ex surcharge due to length. We use cardboard packaging whenever possible to provide the lowest shipping weight. Picture frame molding up to 6 foot can be shipped without extra service charges through Fed Ex.

21. Are your Molding lengths exactly the length that is ordered?
Our molding lengths may vary depending on due to board lengths among other variables. For instance, typical 8 foot molding may vary in length within a range (94 to 96) inches and we have adjusted our per foot price to reflect this difference. Should you require exact lengths for your project, just let us know and we will provide you with your requirements.

22. How often do you experience delayed shipping due to orders in a backlog situation?
Although we take pride in our ability to maintain short order lead-times, we sometimes fine ourselves in an order backlog situation as a result of being out of stock. Usually this is the result of one or more larger orders that prevent smaller orders from being completed. With the exception of picture frame molding, we stock very little construction or restorative molding due to the randomness of the requirements of our typical orders. We do provide our customers will either telephone or email notification when delays will occur. To date, our typical backlog has ranged from one to two weeks.

23. How often do you update your product pricing?
Our lumber pricing has been relative stable. Although lumber prices have risen, we continue to maintain product pricing that we believe is below market. Our intention is to provide quality picture frame molding and restorative millwork to our customers at a competitive price.

24. What type of packaging costs should I expect for my order?
We provide our packaging pricing to you at our lowest cost. The majority of our orders are shipped in cardboard boxes and we charge a nominal packaging fee. Picture frame molding over 5 feet require one box with will hold many picture frame molding pieces depending on the width of the molding. Picture rail requires two boxes with multiple pieces within the box. We ship in 4 x 4 and 6 x 6 boxes up to 60 inches in length.

25. What do I do if I receive a damaged order from the carrier?
Please call the freight forwarding company to file a claim and also give us a call let us know. We encourage taking a picture(s) that provides evidence of the shipping container damage for substantive proof. Should your order require to be returned to us, we will issue a Return Authorization Number and instructions to be used for returning the order. Most often, the freight forwarder provides a settlement for those cases where the damage is clearly the result of the freight forwarder.

26. Does FrameWorxz offer Mat Board for sale?
We continue to review options for adding Mat Board to our list of products to better serve our customers. We have, at this time, not added this product but should you have any questions relating to mat board or need a source, just give us a call and we will provide you with the name and number of our suppliers.

27. What if the molding I receive is bent, warped, etc?
Working with many species of wood is challenging at times due to the many variables that may affect its ability to warp or bend. Our shop utilizes a controlled environment to maintain our kiln dried lumber at a moisture of 8 to 10%. Based on our internal quality checks, we will not ship picture frame or restorative molding that appears warped or bend due to the relieving of wood stress in the molding process which typically affects smaller molding profiles. Normally, any slight warp or bending of the molding that occurs during shipping is the result of severe temperature changes during shipment.

28. Are the shipping charges quoted in the Store accurate?
Our shipping charges are built into our on-line store through Fed Ex and reflect the estimated cost of shipping by Fed Ex. Although an estimate, they are finalized upon shipping. We pride ourselves in providing our customers economical alternatives to ship their orders.

29. When I need 14 foot picture rail molding lengths for my project, do you have any suggestions for using 8 foot lengths?
One of the best to achieve this is to order the molding in 8 foot lengths and miter and glue the joints to achieve needed lengths greater than 8 foot. I suggest that you an 80 tooth or greater miter blade for a smooth miter finish and then glue and clamp the joint. Be sure to wipe any excess glue off the joint to assure that you stain will penetrate the wood. From much experience, it is difficult to detect a glued miter joint that is cut and joined properly.

30. Are Custom Picture Frame Sectionals returnable?
Custom Sectionals are made according you our customer specifications and are not returnable. Should you have any questions on how to measure your photograph or art work to determine the proper length and width, just give us a call or review our ordering tips on our website.

31. If I order an assembled picture frame, will glass be included in my order?
Our Picture frames are shipped without glass as it is difficult to assure that the glass will not be broken upon receipt. We advise that your glass be obtained from your local retail store for convenience and safety.

32. Do you have picture frames that are discounted or seconds for sale?
We do have custom sectional picture frames that are standard sizes and are in a variety of picture frame molding profiles on our website. These frames are ready to assembly and either stain or paint to your specifications.
